They take enormous pride in how they look and it is a source of amazement to visitors when they see how beautifully presented kids are on their way to school or how smart Cubans look on a night out especially bearing in mind the living conditions and economic difficulties they face. So how should you dress when you come to Cuba and what should you pack for your luxury Caribbean holiday. We take you through all the possibilities here and make sure that you pack everything you need for the perfect Cuba vacation.

What to wear in Cuba?

1- Everyday Wear

It’s all about the weather which for most visitors is warm and breezy, the typical Caribbean weather rarely gets cold but it has been known so one warm sweater or shawl. The rainy season is June to November and it does occasionally rain in between so one piece of rainproofing. At Cuba Private Travel we supply complimentary umbrellas which serve as sun and rain protection and are also incredibly fashionable as they are the Artex printed artwork series.

During the day dress for comfort. Shorts and lite top with comfortable shoes or sandals that will withstand a tropical downpour. Remember restaurants can be a welcome relief from the heat but the aircon can be very chilling so that is why your one warm item will come in handy.

Make sure to pack a sombrero of some kind. The sun can be punishing so the wider the brim the better. We can advise on a good local straw hat if you forget yours and can customize with an inner band for those who find these itchy and a bit too local. That’s it you are set for the day.

2- Specialist Clothing.

A good pair of walking shoes is a very good idea. Cobbles paving is common and can be very tiring. Additionally, a walking stick can also be a big help to negotiate any bumps and potholes. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking. If you plan on being busy and have air dry hiking clothes then do bring those as it means any downpours dry off almost immediately. Good sunglasses are a must as the sun is glaring almost from early morning. These also make great parting gifts for locals who often cannot afford decent polaroid’s. Beach wear is obligatory so make sure you pack goggles, a beach towel and a good sarong.

3- Nights out.

Cubans are not formal. In fact, if you have to attend a formal event men will be normally in guayabera and women in lite casual colorful dresses. But most evenings you will be either having drinks in a rooftop bar or dinner in a stylish restaurant. You may even have tickets to the ballet or musical event. Here you will see most Cubans will have dressed up and made an effort so you should too.

You won’t need a suit, but locals appreciate smart casual wear and frown on shorts and flip slops in the evening. It brings down the tone for everyone. Choose cotton or linen in light colors or a juicy print, we all love the color. Cubans keep a keen eye on fashion so you will be surprised to see up-to-date fashions on seemingly poorer locals. When you hit the clubs, you will need to be wearing shoes, and although there is no dress code you will be refused admission if you are not presentable especially with your shoes.

What extra items are useful to pack to bring to Cuba

A cotton hanky is a very useful item and you will see locals use these throughout the day to mop perspiring brows. A small hand towel is also a great idea to wrap your water bottle and stop spills etc. We especially advise you to bring your own water bottle so that you do not have to buy plastic bottles and a stock of paper straws to use instead of plastic in restaurants and bars. Cuba has a low but growing plastic imprint so we are doing all we can to make sure that we do not contribute to this.

For ladies and gentlemen, a fan is an excellent item to buy when you get to Cuba as you will find it invaluable during the day. It’s also pretty cool and one can learn the various fan signals as a fun way to learn about Cuban culture. A pashmina is a very useful item as it offers great protection against those freezing air con systems at night.

At Cuba Private Travel we advocate donating when you come to Cuba. This is a great way to offload unwanted clothing and still have plenty of choices while on holiday yourself. You simply pack 25 to 50 percent of your case with summer clothes you will use on holiday but then donate. We offer to launder and iron these for you and make a donation to a charity of your choice such as Caritas which has an excellent distribution system . If means you can still use your clothing and know they are going to a good home when you leave.

Cuban people are very smart dressers.
