There’s a lovely little coastal town in an eastern corner of the country that plays host for one week from the 1st to the 7th of July each year to the coolest and most secret film festival we know about in the world – and this year it was relaunched to great success.
The small town of Gibara lights up with film and documentary screenings, live music, theatre performances, art exhibitions, and debates on film-making and post-production. It used to be called the “Cine Pobre” Festival (low-budget) but this year it re-branded as simply the Festival Internacional de Cine de Gibara – which means that more commercial and mainstream films are invited to join the avant-garde offerings that the festival is usually known for.
